Nicholas Hoult's outfit in Tom Ford's visual masterpiece A Single Man has stuck with me since viewing the film back in July. The angora sweater with the matching button-up underneath... very "on trend," if you will. The fact that it was worn by the beautiful and talented Hoult made it that much better. His little lady friend wasn't bad either.

New York Magazine's Rebecca Milzoff interviewed Hoult back in December, and he had this to say on the fuzzy wonder:

"Oh the angora sweater? Yes, it definitely had a life of it's own. It got a lot more attention than me, most of the time, whereby it would frizz up under the hot lights and need to be hair-sprayed down, because it would get too fluffy. It needed a lot of attention. I've become quite intimate with that sweater."

We share a mutual obsession with Mick Jagger (a poster of his face circa 1964 hangs over our living room table) so when someone pointed me in the direction of these pictures posted by Rolling Stone in honor of Mick's sixty-seventh birthday, I thought it appropriate to post some of them in her honor.

Mad Men is back, and we're all bursting with excitement. The season four opener was sensational with new drama, new sets, and, most importantly, new clothes. Mad Men has created a fashion phenomenon for fall (see here and here), resulting in an abundance of decidedly chic editorials.

Things to add to the fall wishlist: full skirts, cropped sweaters, and bow heels.

So how about this whole Twilight thing, huh? Kind of crazy. I saw the first film with my lovely ex-roommate Jenny and my darling Stevie and called it quits after that. Not only was the acting atrocious, the storyline completely unbelievable (even for a vampire love story), but the vampires just didn't look like vampires.

Exhibit A: Alice Cullen as played by Ashley Greene.

A little too pretty, right? A little too... alive, maybe?

Now this is how I picture vampire vixens. Swathed in black lace and crimson velvet for the August issue of US ELLE, Greene actually looks like she could suck the life out of someone. Leave it to Kate Lanphear to properly clothe a creature of the night.

Spotted Jemina Pearl, former Nashvillian and front woman for the brat-punk band be your own PET, while flipping through the May 2010 issue of Jalouse. I was never particularly fond of be your own PET, and I still haven't gotten around to listening to the solo album she released last October (although I am intrigued after reading that both Iggy Pop and Thurston Moore make guest appearances), but what I am fond of is this spread. The punky denim vest and cutoffs balance out the sweetness of the John Galliano trench and Miu Miu platforms. Honestly, I'm just overjoyed to see someone do something different with that Miu Miu collection. It is by far my favorite collection from spring, but the editors have really stretched it thin the past couple of months. It looks fresh on Jemina. Just in time for fall.

I'm excited to see what Giles does over at Ungaro. I don't think the man could do any wrong in my eyes, but he's got quite a mess to clean up (see here).

Karen Elson and Jack White photographed in Nashville, Tennessee in celebration of the release of Elson's debut album The Ghost Who Walks. Shot by Annie Leibovitz and styled by Grace Coddington for the June 2010 issue of US Vogue.

"As if the album--this inspired collaboration beween two strange birds--weren't enough, out of it has also come this photo shoot: the first time the couple has agreed to be photographed together. With ever prior request, Elson would ask White if he was interested, and his answer was always the same: Nope. 'But when this one came about,' she says, 'for whatever reason, he was sort of like, You know this is going to be the only time we are ever, ever, ever going to do this, so it might as well be with the best people on the planet, it might as well be with Annie and Grace, to get that one great image of the pair of us.'"

The result is fourteen pages of pure gold. Go pick up a copy because the interwebz does not do the spread justice.

I've noticed a growing number of designers revisiting the 60s, my favorite decade, over the past two seasons or so, no doubt thanks in part to the overwhelming amount of attention Miu Miu and Prada's Spring 2010 collections have received. And rightfully so, I say. Let's be through with the 80s for a while. I'll forever love the studs, the leather moto jackets and the music (see here and here and here), but the 80s bit has been done... for the past two years. Or maybe three. It's been so long I can't even remember. It's time for a change.

By the way, if you haven't seen Karl Lagerfeld's latest short film "Remember Now," you can watch it here. It is disgustingly beautiful.

I've never been the biggest fan of the color red, but the monochrome red in Valentino's Pre-Fall 2010 collection really struck my fancy.

And my obsession with teen dramas continues. Meet Cassie, the space cadet from seasons 1 and 2 of the U.K. phenomenon Skins. She reminds me very much of Julia Frakes in the way that she can put on any number of mismatched pieces of clothing and still look like a little fairy princess. The result is always an outfit that's just a tiny bit off, but Cassie's a bit off in general so it works. And that's why we love her. Er, loved her, I guess I should say. The new cast is not quite as good as the old one.

Today marks the 51st anniversary of Buddy Holly's death, otherwise known as "The Day the Music Died". We're pretty tight, Buddy and I. We share the same hometown (Lubbock, TX), and I visited the Buddy Holly Center, like, ten times growing up. They handed out fake glasses with those thick black frames that everyone loves. I thought they were pretty super geeky at the time. If you don't know much about Buddy Holly and his music, I suggest you go read up on him, or at least watch how this woman introduces him on the Arthur Murray Dance Party in 1957. You youngsters and your crazy rock 'n' roll music...

It snowed all weekend. I wore my (faux) fur all weekend. 'Twas the only thing that could keep me warm. We Southerners don't know how to dress for your winter weather. We think it's really pretty, though. Other weekend highlights included band practice, meeting a nice cop, cleaning my apartment, Akutagawa, a John Hughes mini-marathon, writing a fantastic short story in my head (and then promptly forgetting it once I fell asleep), showering once, and watching Drake perform at the Grammys.

Here's to driving to class on the ice tomorrow morning.

Christmas has come and gone and, sadly, so has the majority of my Christmas money. As I've mentioned before, coats and shoes are my wallet's kryptonite. No buyer's remorse this year, though. All of the pieces are well made and 100% cohesive with my aesthetic. I only wish the boots had more heel to them. I rarely ever go out in anything less than four inches anymore, especially now after all of the Holiday binge-eating...

This has proved to be the most unexciting, unspectacular Saturday night of my entire existence... so I did a little Googling. This photo and the photo in the last post are featured in British Vogue's February 2010 issue. I found this exert from the accompanying article particularly interesting:

Mosshart and Hince have already started work on a fourth Kills album and, by the time you read this, The Dead Weather will have reunited in Nashville to record the follow up to Horehound. There are plans for them to tour Australia and Japan. White, reached by email, says that Mosshart is "the best female front person out there right now". "I don't think anyone can touch her," he writes. "She's a grenade with the pin missing." (White clearly has a way with a one-liner. When I ask him to describe Mosshart in three words, he says, "Lady Gaga's nightmare.")

White is similarly adamant about his bandmate's position as a style leader. I wonder how important it is for a rock musician to looks the part? "You have to appear to give a damn - not about fashion, but about life," White writes. "The people who wear pyjamas to the mall obviously couldn't care less about art or anything of even mild interest. Alison is not one of those people."

And that is why I don't wear my pyjamas out of the apartment. Well... I do. Quite a bit, actually. But since I live in Nashville, I'll probably think twice before I wear them out ever again... lest I run into Jack White at the mall.

Hadn't heard much about Aggie in a while so I headed over to the Fashion Spot forums to see what's up. Apparently she's given up modeling and hired an acting coach. Do I care? No, not really. But I was pleasantly surprised by her new dark hair and even darker style. I was also surprised by all of the negative feedback her new look had inspired. One commentator even went so far as to say that Aggie was now "irrelevant to the fashion world." Ouch. I couldn't disagree more. I feel like Aggie's mismatched style and platinum blonde hair was as relevant to 2007 as her new look is to 2010. It's definitely more relevant to my aesthetic. Styles change; people change. I think she looks killer. Keep it up, Aggie.

I've been living out of a suitcase for the past two weeks. And by "living out of a suitcase" I mean that all of my clothes are heaped into a pile in my suitcase, and for the past two weeks I've been wearing virtually the same outfit. Sometimes I get really inspired by the lack of options that comes with "living out of a suitcase," but alas, that has not been the case this break. I haven't even had the desire to pull up any fashion blogs the past couple of days. I just want to hang up all of my clothes in my closet again. I feel like that's the only thing that could possibly inspire me now.

So there's my sorry excuse for lack of posting. My break has been well spent, though. I played with family, wrote an article, re-wrote a paper, celebrated New Years with friends, nursed a sick boyfriend back to health, and got a head start on the reading list for my class on modern Japanese fiction in the bathtub. I had never read any Japanese fiction before, and now I'm hooked. I started out with a collection of short stories by Takako Takahashi called Lonely Woman, which was fantastic, and now I'm working on The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Murakami. I know, I know, I know... Murakami was cool like forever ago. I totally missed the bandwagon, but better late than never, right? I'm enjoying the novel for sure, but I'm almost enjoying the cover more than the actual text. It's the first time I've felt like a cover has actually enhanced my reading of a book. All of Murakami's covers are fascinating. For the American translations, the art is mostly done by book jacket designers Chip Kidd (left) and John Gall (right).

So I guess I haven't been so completely uninspired. But enough about me. How is/was your break? Anybody get anything cool for Christmas?

When I think of 60s style, I think of Bob Dylan.

These photographs were taken by Barry Feinstein, the man responsible for some of the most iconic album covers of all time. I saw these photographs and a few others on display at the National Portrait Gallery in London this summer in promotion for Feinstein's book Real Moments, a collection of shots from Dylan's 1966 European and 1974 American tours. I asked Santa to make me one of these books for Christmas.

Review: Rodarte for Target

Stopped by Target yesterday morning on my way home for the holidays to check out the highly anticipated Rodarte collaboration. I tried on the blue swiss dot dress, the leopard mini, and the black and champagne crepe slip lace dresses and walked away with none of them, but despite that, my first impression of the line is a B.

It's definitely one of the better designer collaborations; I'll give the Mulleavy sisters that. The pieces look much better in person than they do in that hideous look book (see above), and the colors are beautiful, especially the champagne color. And the fit wasn't bad. It wasn't perfect, mind you, but it wasn't awful. I tend to agree with Kristen from Bleach Black when she says that the fit is always the deal breaker with these Target collabs, but I must say, these dresses fit better than those from past lines. (Remember those cute little Erin Fetherston dresses with the Peter Pan collars? If I ever managed to get mine on, I had to break out the scissors to get it off again.) A-lines do nothing for my figure anyway. The dresses have one other major design flaw that I could find. The tops are fastened in the back with tiny plastic snaps that are sewed right onto the mesh fabric. I had to pry the snaps open with my fingernails to avoid ripping the material.

Overall, not bad. I probably won't end up buying any of the pieces myself, but I would recommend them to others… with... slight enthusiasm. What do you think?

My boyfriend is a bit of a tech geek. When I saw him come across a headline containing the words "digital magazines" in his latest batch of articles this afternoon, I had him send it to me so I could check it out for myself.

BERG is a British design consultancy that works with companies like BBC and Nokia to help research and develop their technologies. They've recently teamed up with Swedish media group Bonnier, whose vision is to "continuously reinvent the art of publishing", to create this conceptual video that explores the future of digital magazines. Because I live for fashion media and hope to someday, somehow make a career out of it, the idea of digital magazines is both fascinating and frightening. It changes the game completely.

It's nice to see that developers are keeping in mind the importance of things like identifiable covers and the sense of accomplishment that comes from reading a magazine, but it seems that this sort of technology still has a long way to go before devoted magazine readers will abandon print completely. Regardless, this is a glimpse of where we are headed.

I'm pretty much finished with this semester, and... well, I don't really know what to do with myself now. So, yeah. I've just been spending a lot of time looking at shoes. I don't know whether you can tell, but I'm kind of a shoe girl. And a coat girl. Shoes and coats are my thing.

Is there anyone that doesn't love these shoes? I really don't think so because they've been blogged about a bazillion times. Don't mean to beat a dead horse, but they really are works of art. If Ziggy Stardust were to die and come back as a shoe, I really feel like it would be that second one.

Miu Miu Spring 2009

And don't even get me started on these kind of nineties, kind of sixties, completely mind-blowing platforms. These shoes put Miu Miu in my top five for Spring, although the clothes hold their own fairly well. I absolutely must own a pair of these beauties someday. It's one of those pairs I'll have to find in the future when I have a good career and loads of money to blow. Whenever that happens.

But on a more practical note, I'm thinking of purchasing these buckle wedges from Forever 21. I figure they're a nice Surface to Air alternative. I went to the store to look at them last night, but they didn't have any in yet. I may just have to order them online and cross my fingers that they're sturdy.

So... what to do now. My room desperately needs to be cleaned, and I should probably go ahead and get a head start on next semester's reading, but in all honesty, I'll most likely spend the rest of the night watching Melrose Place. Oh, how I've missed you.

I've been absent from the Internet lately. It's been a melancholy week, and melancholy makes me think black lace. This weekend and next week aren't looking much better, but I've got a few hours so spare right now so here I am.

The second picture is from Rumi's spread in NO magazine, which I think is actually really wonderful. (Of course, I die for any spread/picture/outfit with those Chloë Sevigny x Opening Ceremony shoes.) Congratulations, Rumi.

And while we're on the subject, can we just talk about this cat in her behind the scenes pictures? Is that a baby jaguar? Can I have it? I'm really set on getting a gray kitten named Spooky, but I might have to get one of these baby jaguar kitties, too. Does anyone know what kind of cat this is?

This is most definitely the daughter of Jane and Serge. The shots of Charlotte doing her makeup, sitting at the bar, and dipping her feet in the pool are so effortlessly glamorous in an otherwise bizarro video. Runs in the family, I suppose. I can't say that I was a fan of her last album, but this song will be on repeat around here for a while... partly because it's a catchy song, partly because Charlotte is so beautiful, and partly because Beck owns my soul.

My goal for this blog is not to have you covet everything that you see and become dissatisfied with your own wardrobe (even though I myself fall into this trap more frequently than I'd like to admit) but to inspire you to be creative and push the boundaries and dress the way that you want to dress. Like fiction or music or nearly any other form of art, fashion allows you to "dream a new idea of yourself", and I wish that more people would take advantage of that.

It's hard to tell who's behind those mangy locks, but if I had to venture a guess, I'd say Alison Mosshart. And while I've recently come to realize that she's probably a super conceited bad word in real life, I still can't help but find her incredibly, incredibly hot.

This picture pretty much epitomizes my current state of existence. I've been living in my poncho, reading a whole lot more than usual, and I just got my own mangy locks trimmed for the first time in over three months. However, if someone were to take a picture of me in my continuously disheveled state, it most definitely would not turn out this good.

So... here's to you, Alison. Come back to Nashville so I can drool over you in person.

Change makes me want to run away, forget everything, and start over with a clean slate, which I have effectively done twice thus far in my life. And both times it was fantastic.

I was only in London for one month this summer, and that was three whole months ago, but I'm still having trouble adjusting to living in a city I find so wholly uninspiring. I didn't always find Nashville uninspiring. I used to dream about living here back when I was in Texas. I was really into the whole music scene, which was something that my hometown most lacked. Not to say that I've fallen out of love with music. I've just fallen out of love with the music scene.

So I'll eventually move somewhere else, and then I'll fall out of love with that place, too, and I'll move again, and maybe someday I'll live happily ever after. The end, I guess.

Tony Scherman and David Dalton have written a new book on Andy Warhol called Pop: The Genius of Andy Warhol. I swear, there could never be enough books written about him. The man was infinitely complicated. You could read every book on Warhol out there, and you'd still be just as clueless as you were before.
